Wildlife, giraffe conservation and Nairobi's colonial era history
This Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen tour creates a complete full day experience on the southern side of Nairobi. It begins with genuine wildlife viewing inside Nairobi National Park, continues with Rothschild's giraffe conservation at the Giraffe Centre, then finishes with the history and gardens of the Karen Blixen Museum.
The itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to understand Nairobi as more than a gateway city. Within one day, you move from protected savannah and rhino habitat to a conservation education centre and finally into the historical landscape of the Karen district.
Nairobi National Park
The day begins with an early game drive in Kenya's first national park. Kenya Wildlife Service records more than 100 mammal species, more than 400 bird species and a significant black rhino sanctuary. Lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebra and many antelope species may be encountered, while the Nairobi skyline provides an unmistakable background.
Check current park rules and visitor information through the official Kenya Wildlife Service page.
Giraffe Centre
After leaving the park, continue to the Giraffe Centre. The Centre is operated by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife and is known for Rothschild's giraffe conservation and environmental education. The elevated platform provides close viewing while staff and displays explain giraffe biology and conservation.
The Centre currently operates from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily. For current visitor guidance, use the official Giraffe Centre website.
Karen Blixen Museum
The final major stop is the Karen Blixen Museum, administered by the National Museums of Kenya. The house was once part of the farm owned by Danish author Karen Blixen and her husband, Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke. National Museums of Kenya notes that the house was built in 1912, was purchased by Karen and her husband in 1917 and later became internationally associated with the story portrayed in Out of Africa.
The museum preserves furniture, farm equipment and other historical material, while the gardens and nature trail retain views toward the Ngong Hills. Guided tours are offered through the day. Learn more from the official National Museums of Kenya Karen Blixen Museum page.
A well balanced Nairobi full day
Doing the national park first makes good use of the cooler morning wildlife period. The Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum are then visited later in the day because their experience is less dependent on wildlife movement. A lunch stop in the Karen or Lang'ata area can be added according to the traveller's preference.
This tour suits first time Nairobi visitors, families, couples and travellers with one complete free day before or after a longer Kenya safari. For more Nairobi and Kenya ideas, browse Euclea's safari collection or use Plan My Safari.
