Five days through Kenya’s Rift Valley and the Masai Mara
This 5 day Kenya safari combines three very different travel experiences in one compact route: rhino and birdlife viewing around Lake Nakuru, active Great Rift Valley scenery around Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate, and two nights in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The journey starts and ends in Nairobi and is designed as a small group joining safari using a pop up roof 4x4 Land Cruiser.
The route is especially useful for travellers who want more variety than a single reserve safari but do not have a full week available. Instead of rushing directly to the Mara and back, the itinerary uses the Rift Valley stops to add different landscapes, conservation stories and outdoor experiences before the longer wildlife days in the Mara.

Why this five day route works
The itinerary moves progressively from Nairobi into the central Rift Valley before continuing southwest to the Mara. Lake Nakuru provides a focused wildlife day without requiring a very long first transfer. Lake Naivasha then adds a change of pace with time around Hell’s Gate and the lakeside before the journey continues through Narok toward the Mara. The final two nights are reserved for Kenya’s most famous savannah ecosystem, giving one full day for game viewing before the return to Nairobi.
Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is known for its lake landscape, birdlife and rhino conservation. Kenya Wildlife Service describes the park as an important sanctuary for both black and white rhinos, with approximately 450 recorded bird species and a mix of grassland, woodland, escarpment and lake habitats. Current park information, visitor rules and conservation guidance are available from the official Kenya Wildlife Service Lake Nakuru page.
Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate
The second night is based around Lake Naivasha, giving the safari a more active Rift Valley interlude. The planned day includes time at Hell’s Gate National Park, where the open landscape, cliffs, geothermal features and walking opportunities create a different experience from vehicle based game viewing. Kenya Wildlife Service highlights hiking, cycling, rock climbing and dramatic geological scenery among the park’s main attractions. See the official Hell’s Gate National Park page for current visitor guidance. A Lake Naivasha boat ride can be added as an optional activity when requested.
Masai Mara National Reserve
The final safari region is the Masai Mara National Reserve. Open grasslands, river systems and high concentrations of wildlife make the Mara particularly rewarding for big cats, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, plains game and many other species. Migration movements are seasonal and depend on natural conditions, so river crossings are never guaranteed. For reserve background and visitor information, see the official Maasai Mara National Reserve website.
Small group budget safari style
This package is configured as a budget small group joining safari with a maximum of seven travellers per safari vehicle. It suits solo travellers, couples, friends and families who are comfortable sharing the 4x4 with other guests. The core route is fixed so that group logistics remain practical, while departures remain subject to confirmed availability.
Accommodation is simple and functional rather than luxury focused. The planned pattern uses a hotel around Lake Nakuru, a budget hotel or resort around Lake Naivasha and a tented camp near the Masai Mara. Named properties can change when rooms are unavailable, but Euclea Safaris will keep the same general comfort level and route unless the traveller agrees to an alternative.
Who this safari suits
This safari is a strong choice for first time visitors who want to see the Mara while also experiencing the Rift Valley, travellers working with a shorter holiday window, solo guests who prefer a group joining format and families comfortable with road travel. Children can join, with final rooming and child arrangements confirmed during quotation. Travellers who want a fully private vehicle or a higher accommodation category should request a tailor made alternative through Plan My Safari.
