Wildlife, community conservation and the landscapes of northern Kenya
This 4 day Samburu and Reteti safari is built for travellers who want more than a conventional series of game drives. From Nairobi, the route travels north through the central highlands into the Samburu and Buffalo Springs ecosystem, spends two days on wildlife viewing and then adds a dedicated conservation experience at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary before returning to Nairobi.
The journey is private and uses a pop up roof 4x4. Accommodation is based at Samburu Simba Lodge inside Buffalo Springs National Reserve, or a comparable mid range property if the named lodge is unavailable. This provides a consistent base while the daily programme moves between riverine wildlife areas, open dry country and the community conservation landscape.
Travellers new to Kenya can use our Start Here guide for practical preparation. For a wider look at northern Kenya, read our Samburu destination guide or compare additional Kenya safari itineraries.
Samburu wildlife and the Special Five
Northern Kenya has a distinct ecological character. The Ewaso Nyiro River supports a green corridor through semi arid country and draws elephants and other wildlife toward dependable water. The region is also known for Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, species often grouped together as the Samburu Special Five.
The itinerary uses an arrival game drive followed by a fuller day in the wildlife area so there is time to explore without compressing the experience into a single afternoon. The Samburu County tourism guide provides regional background and current local information.
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary and community led conservation
Day three changes the emphasis from wildlife observation to conservation. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a community led rescue and rehabilitation project in the Namunyak landscape. The visit introduces the work involved in caring for orphaned elephants and the wider relationship between wildlife protection and local livelihoods.
Reteti visits require planning and should be treated as a scheduled part of the confirmed itinerary. For current sanctuary information, visit the official Reteti Elephant Sanctuary website.
Dated adult rates and online booking
The published adult rates are stored by travel period and party size. Solo travellers have one rate and parties of two or more sharing rooms use the published group rate. Adult only bookings with an exact valid rate can proceed through Euclea's online booking flow. Bookings containing children are quoted manually because the public source provides an age policy but not a complete child price matrix.
