About Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary conservation experience

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is located in Namunyak Community Conservancy in northern Kenya and describes itself as the world’s first Indigenous community-owned African elephant sanctuary. Its core mission is to rescue orphaned or abandoned wildlife, rehabilitate animals and release them back into the surrounding wild landscape whenever possible.

Community-led conservation

Reteti is especially important because wildlife protection is tied directly to local community leadership, employment and stewardship. A visit gives travellers context about elephant rescue, keeper care, feeding, rehabilitation and the wider relationship between people, livestock and wildlife in northern Kenya.

Planning a visit

The sanctuary requires advance booking. The official visitor information states that same-day visits are not available and that bookings should be made at least 24 hours in advance. Visiting times are coordinated with elephant feeding schedules, so arrival timing matters.

How Euclea uses Reteti

Euclea currently includes Reteti in a northern Kenya safari combining the broader Samburu and Buffalo Springs ecosystem with community conservation. The sanctuary is mapped as its own destination rather than being hidden under a generic Samburu label.
