Covering approximately 1,787 square kilometers, the park is known for its rugged landscapes, dramatic granite inselbergs, acacia woodlands, and rich conservation history. It gained international recognition as the home of renowned conservationists George and Joy Adamson, famous for their work with lions and the story of Born Free.

The park supports a variety of wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, lesser kudus, hyenas, wild dogs, and numerous bird species. Visitors can enjoy game drives, birdwatching, camping, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and exploring historical sites such as George Adamson’s Camp (Kampi ya Simba).

Often referred to as “The Last Wilderness,” Kora offers an authentic off-the-beaten-path safari experience for travelers seeking solitude, adventure, and pristine natural beauty.

Geography of Kora National Reserve

Kora National Park is located in eastern Kenya, approximately 280 kilometers northeast of Nairobi, within Tana River County. The park covers about 1,787 square kilometers and lies in a semi-arid region characterized by vast open plains, seasonal rivers, and rugged rocky outcrops.

One of the park’s most distinctive geographical features is the presence of prominent granite inselbergs (isolated hills), including Mansumbi, Kumbulanwa, and Kora Rock, which rise dramatically above the surrounding landscape. The mighty Tana River forms part of the park’s western boundary, providing a vital water source for wildlife and supporting riverine forests along its banks.

The vegetation consists mainly of acacia bushland, scrubland, open grasslands, and riverine woodland. The park experiences a hot and dry climate for most of the year, with rainfall occurring mainly during the long rains (March–May) and short rains (October–December).

This diverse landscape creates a unique wilderness environment that supports a wide variety of wildlife while offering spectacular scenery for visitors and photographers.
